My Story
I am a teacher by profession and the 2008-2009 school year marked my 35th year in the classroom.  Like most teachers, I have had to supplement my teacher’s salary.  For 20 plus years I restored and refurbished antique canoes during the summer months.  About 10 years ago I got into the business of making pens and have been making pens of one kind or another ever since.  Being born and brought up in Maine, I wanted a “Maine” theme for my business, therefore, Nature of Maine Pens was born.  All of the pens I make are individually hand crafted and turned by hand on a lathe.  I gather my own materials from the very heart of Maine, its woods and waters.  Nature provides the materials, I provide the labor. I hope you’ll enjoy looking at these very unique and interesting pens and find them just perfect for that difficult person to buy for.
The Products

These unique Maine Pens reflect our state’s love of the sea.  The red is crushed lobster shell, and the blue is crushed mussel shell.  Each time you use this pen you are proudly displaying the country’s colors and also supporting our troops, wherever they are.  And, sports enthusiasts- the red, white, and blue also happen to be the colors of the three time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots!  Go Pats!  The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.

Crushed Lobster Shell
These handsome pens are made from the shells of Maine lobsters.  Most of these lobsters were caught in Frenchman Bay and Blue Hill Bay around Mount Desert Island.  One lobster yields enough shell for approximately two of these pens.  After the shells are crushed, the process including chemical drying time takes three to five days.  The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Chipped Moose Antler / Moose dropping
These interesting looking pens are made from chipped moose antler and the dropping(scat) of Maine’s State animal the “Moose”.  The antlers are chipped because they are hard to come by and expensive to purchase.  The dark half of this pen is moose droppings.  Most of the droppings I use come from Eastern Maine between Lambert Lake and the St. Croix River, although friends and family bring in droppings from all over Maine.  The process from forest floor to completed pen takes about 5 days if all goes well.  Hope you enjoy this unique writing instrument.  It allows people who burn the candle at both ends to also have both ends of the moose!  Thank you for buying this small  piece of Maine. The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

These unusual pens are made from the droppings (scat) of Maine’s official state animal “The Moose”.  It takes approximately 1-1/2 oz. of processed droppings to create this pen.  Most of the droppings I use come from Eastern Maine between Lambert Lake and the St. Croix River.  Although, friends and family do bring in dropping from all over Maine.   The process from forest floor to completed pen takes three to five days.  Thank you for buying this small  piece of Maine and a great conversation piece!    The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Chipped Moose Antler Pen
These pens are made of chipped moose antler from Maine’s state animal.  Considering the size of moose antlers, you would think that a person could make dozens of pens from half a set of antlers.  This however is not the case.  A moose grows a new set of antlers every year.  Growing such massive antlers in such a short period of time makes them very porous and unusable for making pens.  Moose antlers are difficult to find and expensive to buy.  So rather than throw away 80% of an antler.  I now chip up what I previously couldn’t use.  It’s still moose, still from Maine and I get more bang for my buck or in this case, my bull. Thank you for buying this small piece of Maine.  The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Crushed Clam Shell
These attractive pens are made from crushed Maine clam shells.  The clams that gave up their shells for this pen came from the shores of Lamoine State Park across the bay from Mount Desert Island.  It took approximately 1-1/2 oz. of crushed shells to make this pen.  Because of the nature of the clam shell itself, it is the most difficult pen I make.  After the shells are crushed, it takes approximately five days to complete a pen. Thank you for buying this small   piece of Maine.  It really doesn’t cost that many clams!  The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Blue Mussel
These striking pens are made from the shells of mussels.  The mussels used in this pen were harvested from the tidal waters of Frenchman Bay on Mount Desert Island in the town of Bar Harbor, Maine.  It takes approximately 1-1/2 oz of crushed shells to make a pen.  After the shells are crushed the process, including chemical drying time, takes three to five days.   The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Deer Dropping Pen
These unique pens are made from the droppings (scat) of Maine’s white-tailed Deer.  Most of the droppings have been harvested from the forest in and around Old Town, Maine.  I bow hunt, so I’m in the woods quite a lot.  I have even been known to put droppings in my golf bag while looking for lost golf balls (usually not mine).  The process from forest floor to completed pen takes about five days.  The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.

Pine Cone Pen
These attractive pens are made from pine cones.  Maine’s State tree is the “Eastern White Pine”, the state flower is the “White Pine Cone and Tassel” and Maine’s nickname is the “Pine Tree State”.  It seemed only fitting that I make pens from pine cones.  It takes 2 or 3 cones to make a pen this size.  The process from forest floor to finished product takes about five days.  The cones I use are collected from all over the State.  Wherever I scout, hunt, hike or brook fish.  I pick up pine cones.   The  7 mm pen  takes a black medium point Cross refill.  The  10 mm double twist pen has a black medium point Parker refill.
