Meet July Artist of the Month Jim Dickson

Meet Lupine Artisan Jim Dickson

The Forge and Saw is an enterprise I started in 2014 as a creative outlet for a couple of hobbies I became interested in later in my life. I have been in the construction industry for 35 years in one capacity or another and hand been exposed to many, many different trades. A couple of years ago I bought the contents of an old blacksmith shop that was no longer in use in California. I brought all that equipment home and set it up in my garage. That has been a great source of fun for me and time stands still while I’m at the forge and anvil learning to make things using authentic design and joinery methods.

Then, this last winter I had a sudden urge to purchase a wood lathe and the associated tools to supplement my woodworking arsenal. I had never done any lathe work before but, with the varied experience I have with wood from my occupation as a carpenter and builder, it hasn’t taken me long to be comfortable with the process of making small items out of firewood chunks and other pieces of more precious woods. There is no finer place for me to be on a wintry or rainy day than in the woodshop with a warm barrel stove or at the forge and anvil.

My talented wife is my non-objective design consultant and quality control.
